Measuring finality honestly

Why we publish the median and the 99th percentile, and what our finality figure does and does not include.

“Finality” is quoted in many ways across networks. We publish ours as the time from a transaction reaching a validator to the block containing it being irreversible.

Median and tail

A median hides the slow cases users remember. Alongside the median we publish the 99th percentile and the worst hour of each week.

  • Median: 0.42 s over the last 30 days (sample figure).
  • 99th percentile: 1.1 s.
  • Worst hour: 2.8 s, during a regional network incident.

The methodology and raw measurements are open, so anyone can reproduce the numbers from their own node.
